Could there be a trend in home owners wanting more from there landscapes? Are more and more people understanding the value in a landscape design? Assessing a landscape and having a plan ensures a happy home owner and a long lasting landscape. For years a family’s summer home in Massachusetts’ Cape Cod was only half way accessible. With an ample yard taken up by existing forest and poison ivy the family was restricted to there back deck. There was space to eat, entertain and even shower but the thought of finally being able to utilize their yard to its potential proved to be more intriguing than ever.

It was easy to tell from the site visit and assessment there was plenty of space to work to develop and with the family growing a lawn was important. Other challenges included the circulation from the front yard to the back yard and the existing decking to the new features and elements being proposed. Removing the trees for the landscape was a drastic change and it was imperative to reclaim a natural planting screen of the neighbors and street.

Because the existing grade was feet below the deck there needed to be a transition to the lawn. A raised patio or terrace was ideal, adding three steps from deck and three steps from patio to lawn. Unable to re-locate the sliding door on the house presented it self as the best fit to locate the transitional steps. The patio was designed for a transition but also as a functional space and at 250 square feet provided plenty of room for relaxing over there new backyard.

Layering the beds and using evergreen trees easily provided the screen. Predominantly white oak trees on site was not a surprise as they are native to the area however this made it difficult to blend in the new plant list with the evergreen trees. Adding a few more native shrub and grass species helped.

Completed this Fall the family now has plans for a front yard renovation making it a complete landscape overhaul. It is for certain with a new landscape the site has transformed from a vacation destination to a home.

ipad 2 is Business Savvy

We all know the Apple ipad 2 is great for everyday use and sometimes even for business. As you have seen right here on LS7′s blog the ipad is used for personal presentations in small groups even sharing photos, videos and research. Here is something you may not have thought of. The ipad 2 offers video recording in HD fun for family outings and on the fly action. But how about using the HD video for filming updates on job sites, presentations or a real life walk through of built work.

LS7 is taking Apples’s ipad to the next level taking advantage of one of the amazing functions included in the ipad’s affordable package. HD cameras on there on can easily match the price of an ipad. So far the quality of video and sound is sufficient enough to be able to edit and share the videos in a respectable quality.

Here Zach is on a job site near completion, because of the projects exceptional level of detail in the construction and materials this was a great opportunity to share. Showcasing LS7′s design and the contractors work all in one. While still shots hold a certain value video is an audience’s favorite.

Thanks to the ipad we will be able to share this project on Facebook and Youtube giving people the idea they are walking through the site themselves. Stay tuned for the final cut video coming soon from Landscape Studio 7.

Like so many home owners are beginning to realize a new landscape can make or break your home. The benefits are clear, a piece of mind knowing your property looks great and a higher resale value. It’s no fib, a maintained property can bring more value to not only your home but the entire neighborhood. Let me tell you something you may not know. There are in fact professional landscape design services offered at affordable prices. Landscape Studio 7 and it’s employees put forth such a professional landscape design package at a price any one can afford.

Here is the typical landscape design process from LS7:

Existing Front yard and Entrance.

Starting with a site visit and the existing conditions LS7 draws up a plan. From here they develope a design based on the home owners interests and needs. Here a plan was done in phases with the front yard to be installed first.

Some main features of the design are the vegetable garden and front entrance sequence. A tree covered back yard meant the only sunny area on site was a corner of the front yard. This was a good opportunity to tie in the granite foundation, most of the houses on the block including this one have beautiful large granite stone foundations. The use of granite slabs to retain the soil for the garden allowed for a level and well drained area. The existing front entrance had lost it’s old world charm, overgrown yew bushes do not offer much appeal. A simple jog in the edging created a plant bed allowing for two granite pillars to frame the entrance. Perennial grasses and annual color draw your attention to not only to the detail in the granite but now the homes front facade.

3D Images were used to help understand the overall idea

3D design is always used in Landscape Studio 7′s process. Not only does this help the client see our vision but provides LS7 with an idea on how to include specific features, materials and colors. What this does exactly is enhance our design, the customers experience and the project management by being able to choose materials.
